Lake Tech was awarded a $25,000 planning grant which will allow us to create an integrated GED/Construction Trades skills program of study. This year we will write curriculum, develop and strengthen business partnerships in the construction field, and prepare for implementation during the 2016-17 school year.
Arts, AV & Technology
Digital Design – Last Friday was dubbed, “Freehand Friday” in the Digital Design program. Students learned about mechanized folding in the commercial printing industry. Then they used this kit of intricately die cut shapes to build a city. It was definitely an architectural wonder!
Hospitality & Tourism
Commercial Foods & Culinary Arts – In the first installment of “Teach the Director a Thing or Two,” Diane Culpepper was attempting to learn how to decorate a cake. Chef Koenig made it look so easy. The students made it look so easy. Culpepper…. Not so much.

Adult Education
GED Prep – This week in Adult Ed, we were busy with topics relating to the U.S. Constitution and voting rights. Since it was Constitution Day on September 17, Mr. Seidner presented a week-long lesson on the Constitution. Discussions were held on the Bill of Rights, Amendments, Founders of the Constitution, Three Branches of Government, and more! On Thursday, students enjoyed guest speaker, Lake County Election Supervisor Emogene Stegall and were given information on how to register to vote as well as the opportunity for students to register for their voter card here on campus and some did! As a class, we engaged in a voting activity that led us through the different legislative acts that impacted various groups and demographics – who could and could not vote – since the 13 colonies formed. It really opened some eyes and provided an opportunity for students to interact more!
Students delved into friction and Newton’s Law #1, as they learned about the scientific method and completed their first lab experiment and lab write-up this week! They maneuvered the tricky terms of control, dependent, and independent variables as well as differentiated between measureable/quantitative data and observational data. Remember matchbox cars? The experiment had them observing and measuring how a matchbox car traveled on different surfaces.
Friday, we welcomed more new students and had a discussion on careers in science. We helped prepare for activities for next week, when we will celebrate Literacy Week. Mr. Seidner also showed off his Tech skills; he used Tellagami for an introduction to our new Bookstore Kiosk. Mrs. Rosenglick would be proud!

September is National Literacy Month. The Adult Education program had a week of activities to celebrate, and our theme was Joining Hands to Support Adult Education and Literacy. The offsite GED and ESOL classes joined us here on Tuesday for “Lunch on the Lawn,” enjoyed a tour of the school, and played a few literacy based games. Mrs. Avelli, one of our instructors who is a published author, read some of her poetry. Students from the ESOL class sang some songs – they use this learning strategy to help them practice and increase their English skills. Students made posters and videos as well as talked about their favorite books and memories of reading. Mr. Seidner introduced the students to public domain (FREE) on-line book resource websites. At our Advisory Board meeting we showed off many of the posters and activities that we have been doing so far this year.
Chief Ron Williams came to our class to talk about the Fire Fighting program and had many interesting questions and many interested students! We would like to have all CTE program instructors or representatives come to our class and talk about.
We have many sites with full classes and have waiting lists for all of our north classes – main campus (morning, afternoon, and evening), Goodwill Leesburg, Genesis Leesburg (day and evening). It appears that Lake Tech’s Adult Education and ESOL programs are in hot demand!
