Arts, AV Technology & Communication
Digital Design 1 & 2 – Both new Digital Design 1 students, Brittani Hollenbeck and Ryan Powell, earned their Florida Ready-to-Work certifications this week in record time!
We mailed 10 entries to the SkillsUSA National Pin and Shirt design competition. One winner each will be chosen for the lapel pin and t-shirt, which are given to all 5000+ contestants at the national contest in Kansas City. Fingers crossed for a Lake Tech Digital Design student to win the contest!
Digital Design 2 students learned to identify and specify paper this week.
Business Management & Administration
Accounting Operations and Administrative Office Specialist – Visitors often state that the Business classroom resembles and functions like an office rather than a classroom. And what keeps us operating efficiently is our “officer manager.” She or he is responsible for many activities, including the introductions of guests, answering the phone, and keeping the office supply table functional. Here we see Suzanne Auritt showing how our phone system works to new students Dominique Hutto, Jessica Straub, Jessica Pantoja, and Kasey Steele. Then Jessica Pantoja is shown taking a call with lots of support from her fellow classmates.
We also took time to recognize students who have earned certifications. Here Suzanne Auritt and Zana Dudly are shown with their newly earned OCP certificates.
Our class also took time to honor Suzanne Auritt, Joey Williams, and Cortney Donaldson for earning Gold Certification from “My Florida Ready to Work.” For earning this level they had the opportunity to pick a prize from our “swag” bag!! Congratulations to all.
Health Science
Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician – The new students had the opportunity to attend an OSHA “Safe-Patient Handling” workshop at Lake Sumter State College. The students learned how to safely transfer patients using two different types of lifts. They were able to practice on each other, use equipment that they will use when they become employed, and had a great time!
Practical Nursing
The Mt. Dora Art Festival was held on Saturday and the Lake Tech student nurses were there to assist. The students were paired with the ambulance crew and the Mt. Dora Fire Department. A very special thanks to the student nurses who worked the event!

Law and Public Safety
Fire Fighting – The Lake Tech Fire Academy will be extremely busy this month. On February 4 and 5, we will be testing 49 applicants for 15 open Fire Fighter/EMT positions with the Osceola County Fire Department.
On February 10, the next Minimum Standards Class of 35 students will begin. We are excited to welcome them to Lake Tech!
On February 21, we will test applicants for a Fire Fighter/Paramedic position with the Tavares Fire Department.
At the end of February, we will be giving an Engineer’s/Driver’s promotional test for the Tavares Fire Department.
Law Enforcement – The Night Law Enforcement Recruits completed their Patrol One block this week with an amazing class average on their exam. They have now moved out to the range for the Firearms block of instruction. Orientation for the next Law Enforcement and Corrections classes will be held on Monday. Classes begin on February 10.
Manufacturing
The Welding students who have already earned their pipe certification have been fabricating a POW camp escape wall, a cliff climber, and a swinging bridge. These items will become part of a new playground for children of all ages to participate in military-style training techniques and team building activities. Thanks to Instructors John Dahler and Robert Sherwood and all the Welding students for working on this service project for our community.
Transportation & Logistics
Diesel instructor Randy Yates and his students are cleaning and beautifying the shop area in preparation for the SkillsUSA regional competition on February 28.
Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing – We are excited to announce that Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes, through The Collision Repair Education Foundation (I-CAR), donated many boxes of tape, paint, and supplies that the Lake Tech Auto Collision students will be able to use. A special thanks to instructors David Beliveau and James Brucker for their partnership with ICAR!
Auto Service Technology – It’s been a cold week, but our engine repair students managed to get this engine disassembled and now they’re already putting it back together. They are planning to have it in the vehicle and running by next week. We also welcomed two new students this week; they’re anxious to begin working in the shop.
Adult Education – Preparation for the GED! We had another busy week with new students to orient and get started with their programs. Our subject this week was Science and the topic was “The Cell: Animal VS Plant.” Instructor Mrs. Avelli covered cells each day using a different subject. For example, the second day was a reading application. The students went into different groups and they read information, at their level, about cells. We continued with “Wacky Wednesday” and had various math groups based on the same concept of area and perimeter and related it to cells. Students competed with a math vocabulary match game. We used some cool interactive websites to learn about cells. Students also expanded their knowledge of technology by learning to copy and paste, save documents, and key their responses. By the end of the week students were able to successfully answer questions and then wrote up what they learned about plant and animal cells. Next week is Social Studies!
ESOL – Just a year ago, Lake Tech ESOL teacher, Marvina Hooper, had a dream. She dreamt of opening a home, much like a Ronald McDonald House, where family members of hospitalized patients in Tegucigalpa, Honduras could find help. She witnessed the great needs people often had while she and her husband served as missionaries in Honduras years ago. Very often folks came from outside of the city and had nowhere to sleep and no money for food.
And now, the dream has become a reality. Mrs. Hooper will be going to Honduras where CASA DAVID will be opening on Feb. 21st. CASA DAVID will not only provide comfortable beds, hot meals, a place to shower, and wash clothes, but will offer a warm embrace and hope! Casa David is a faith-based initiative that will bring help and hope to many. Anyone interested in knowing more about this exciting project can contact Mrs. Hooper at ext. 1876.
Mrs. Hooper’s students are also excited about the project and are looking forward to skyping with their instructor when she is in Honduras so they can see CASA DAVID firsthand!

- Please let your students know that the 1098Ts where mailed on Tuesday afternoon and should have already arrived in their mailboxes.
- Dr. Sherie Lindamood will take on a new role – that of Student Success Counselor! This position is evolving, but one of the first activities will be the seminars she will be offering on Test Taking Skills, Stress Management, and Study Strategies. Dr. Lindamood will spend Tuesdays at the Institute of Public Safety so our students on that campus will have access as well. Her focus will help our students be even more successful! A schedule of the classes available on the main campus will be available this week.
- Thanks to Tom Netherton and DeAnna Thomas, a new electronic survey has been implemented so our customers can let us know how we are doing. When students complete their visit to the Admissions Department, they have a chance to complete a very quick survey. Congratulations to the Admissions Team as the results continue to be stellar!! Thanks for “providing happiness” to our students and potential students!

WORKSHOPS FOR SUCCESS – Available to All Students
Resume Creating
Students will learn the best practices of creating resumes. They will learn which items should go on a resume and which items should not. Students will learn proper wording, procedures, elements, style, and how to input a resume into Word 2010. Handouts and resume samples will be given. Students should be prepared to take notes by bringing pen and paper.
Interviewing
Students will learn how to prepare for an interview, how to dress, and how to answer some of the tough questions during an interview. Post interview tips will also be discussed. Handouts and supplemental information will be given. Students should be prepared to take notes by bringing pen and paper.
The following schedule is for students desiring to attend the Resume Creating and Interviewing workshops. These workshops will be 1-hour sessions from 3 – 4 pm and will be held in the A building in Room 01-210A.
