Academic Affairs
Architecture and Construction
The Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Heating Technology students began practicing on the state-of-the-art trainer in the classroom this week. This air conditioning control system contains the actual components used in the control of commercial and residential heating/cooling systems. All components are pre-wired into a complete thermostat-actuated control system and then diagrammed to facilitate understanding and use.
This trainer allows the instructor to program faults for the students to find and correct. Stop in and take a look at the newest learning tool in the AC lab!
Business Management & Administration
Our Accounting and Administrative Office Specialist students had a very busy week. It started on a very high note as we recognized three of our classmates who earned membership into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). Our entire class participated in the ceremony as Julie Brown, Marlene Satten, and Rose Williams were inducted into this society.
Following that, we prepared for Career Night as four of our students stayed until 7pm to welcome prospective students and their families. They demonstrated expertise with Dragon Software, Excel and Accounting principles, as well providing information about Microsoft Certification testing software. Thanks to Zana Dudley, Brandon Goff, Brinda Ruehlen, and Marlene Satten.
We opened our classroom to welcome Mr. Don Magruder, CEO of Ro-mac Lumber and Supply Company. He gave a very interesting and from the heart presentation about the importance of soft skills in business. He shared personal stories that inspired all in attendance. It was a very positive experience.
By the nature of our jobs, we in the business classes have to be ready to “fill in” where and when needed. This was demonstrated on Thursday and Friday when a number of Lake Tech staff were out. Almost the entire class was able to volunteer to fill in on the “desk” in the admissions areas. From greeting customers and/or potential students and families, to escorting them to specific locations on campus; our students welcomed the opportunity for this “work experience”.
Health Science
On Friday, graduation for the Nursing Assistants was held at Lake Tech. Students received their certificates. Next on their agenda, licensure testing! We wish them lots of success.
The next new program to open at Lake Tech will be Pharmacy Technician. The classroom/lab will be located in B-Building and is currently being transformed into a retail and hospital pharmacy setting.
In this program, students learn medical terminology, medicinal drugs, pharmaceutical compounding, USP 795 standards, sterile techniques, USP 797 standards, maintenance of inventory, IV preparation, receiving and handling of hazardous materials, preparing purchase orders, receiving and checking supplies purchased, printing labels, typing prescription labels, delivering medications, pricing prescription drug orders and supplies, prepackaging unit dose packages, patient record systems, control records, data processing automation in pharmacy, computer application, employability skills, leadership and human relations skills, health and safety, including CPR.
Included in the program are clinical practicum experiences in both retail and hospital environments. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to take the national certification exam and work in this fast paced career field.
Hospitality & Tourism
The Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts students prepared snacks for the parents and students who attended Career Night on December 3. Snacks at Lake Tech are always amazing!

Law and Public Safety
Graduation for 34 Fire Fighter recruits was held December 2. Tavares Fire Chief, Richard Keith was the graduation speaker. On December 3 and 4, the students tested for their state license. Congratulations to a great group of new Fire Fighters!!
The Lake Tech Fire Academy participated in Astatula Elementary School’s Transportation Day. Chief Ron Williams arranged for the Lake Tech fire engine to be front and center at the school on Friday!
The Day Law Enforcement recruits are in Patrol 2 and will graduate in 11 days. Night Law Enforcement recruits are continuing with defensive tactics.
Manufacturing
Both day and evening Welding students have been very busy building new shooting range targets for Lake Tech’s Institute of Public Safety. The students learned many new things in both fabrication and welding.
Diane Culpepper was part of a panel discussion at the statewide Manufacturing Summit held in St. Petersburg last week. She discussed the role of technical centers in the education and training of employees for the manufacturing sector in our state.
Transportation & Logistics
Did you know that Auto Collision students learn to weld? Part of their competencies for graduation include cutting damaged sections of structural steel body panels and welding in new or used replacement as well as welding cracks in frame members. For several months, the students have been working on mastering fabrication certification welds. All the welding coupons were submitted for testing which includes x-raying the coupon for pin holes and stress/tear tests. Thanks to John Dahler, Lake Tech’s lead welding instructor, for assisting the Auto Collision instructors through the process. Twenty-six students completed and passed their welding certification through AWS (American Welding Society)!
Auto Service Technology students had the opportunity to attend the Central Florida Auto Show held at the Orange County Convention Center over the Thanksgiving break.
This week in class, students worked on the air conditioning systems on the vehicles.
Student Affairs
Lake Tech inducted 42 students into the National Technical Honor Society on Friday, November 22. Congratulations to all the students who were nominated.
The National Adult Education Honor Society Induction Ceremony will take place on December 11, at 3 pm in the Lake Tech Dining Room. Thirty-seven students will be inducted and include students from the main campus as well as the off-site locations.
Lake Tech is on a mission! We are sending Christmas cards to our Military Heroes! If your program or department would like to participate in this project, or if you have any questions, please contact Tonyia Dawson, dawsont1@lake.k12.fl.uscreate new email, by email or call extension 1838 as soon as possible please and Mrs. Dawson will deliver the cards to your classroom or office. This is a great way for our students to provide some holiday cheer to others.
