Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
This week the Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R) and Pathway Plus Program (P3 IET) students earned their universal certifications. There was lots of hands on labs involving circuits and tools going on. The Pathway Plus Program (P3 IET) students spent time with topics on economics, civics, and US history. They are getting ready to take GED subject tests and are diligently practicing to hone their comprehension skills. Our integrated lesson concentrated on topics of legislation and safety in the workplace through HVAC article, “Can Employers Refuse to Hire Smokers?” Legislative laws and policies for hiring non-smokers were discussed as well as health and legal ramifications for hiring non-smokers. Florida laws on THC was included as HVAC business partners have expressed this as a topic of needed discussion in the workplace. Students gained a better understanding of their Constitutional rights and personal freedoms vs what they thought they could do or had the right to do.

Furthermore, Crystalyn, an Administrative Office Specialist student, gave a fun presentation on coworkers and managers’ various behaviors and personalities and how to work with all styles.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Enterprise Desktop and Mobile Support Technology
This week some of the Enterprise Desktop and Mobile Support Technology students spent time building a network. Students are working together and having to communicate to set up an entire small network. This network has multiple servers, routers and switches. They have to get all devices on a domain and be able to get them to all talk with each other and use shared resources. The students built critical communication skills along with the essential skills they will need to find success in the Information Technology field.

TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS

Automotive Collision Technology Technician
Last week, Automotive Collision Technology Technician and Automotive Service Technology instructors were invited to visit our business partner, Knapheide Truck Body Manufacturing. The Tour gave them an in depth look at the process of manufacturing and assembly of the large truck beds. Some of the photos we shared include workers prepping the frame, installing the lift gate assembly, which includes welding competencies, installing a PTO drive and hitch, and many other tasks required to create the box bed.

They also learned each technician has their own stall, and each stall has its own door with tool cabinets, clips, nuts and bolts. Additionally, each stall has a digital clock which the technician has to charge their time; by design the technician can maximize their time and avoid walking around. It was interesting for them to learn material that is not in the technicians stall is stored in vending machines and charged to the job accordingly. This is very beneficial to determine exact project cost and revenue.

The instructors learned many valuable things from the industry and brought back lots of ideas to add new processes and technology to the labs and classrooms.

Diesel Systems Technician 1 & 2
What a great week for Lake Technical College and especially the Diesel Systems Technician programs. The City of Tavares and LTC received a $6,000,000 check from a DEO Job Growth Grant and had a visit from Governor DeSantis. This will allow us to begin construction of our new transportation building in Tavares.

This week the students also rebuilt the engine in one of our training trucks and wanted to paint it the wildest color possible (Grabber Green). They have been working on this engine for about two weeks, meticulously going over every part cleaning and inspecting it before assembling the engine. Now they are installing it into the truck and this coming week they will have it running.
