ARCHITECTURE & CONSTRUCTION
Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
This week the Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R) students focused on carbon monoxide and the critical context as it relates to their field of study. Also, advanced student, Ian worked on a thermostat project that allows the technician to understand how the parts work in relationship with each other so as to better troubleshoot the system.
Mr. Bagg also received a picture and message from program graduate Gabriel, telling of his recent employment and success! He writes, “Hey Mr. Bagg, I just started work on Monday. The service manager has been reviewing all of the basics and even went over how to carry an extension ladder and how to climb up on it and all that good stuff. I just wanted to keep you in the loop and let you know how I was doing. I’ll be training with a senior tech and Wednesday is my first day out in the field. Here is a photo of me with the van. Thank you for everything!”
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION
Accounting Operations
The Accounting Operations students are also diligently working on their assignments. This week focused on analyzing business transactions. The students researched property and financial interest and the importance of understanding the business’ financial statements. This fundamental knowledge is necessary for all accounting students and professional success within the field.
Administrative Office Specialist
The Administrative Office Specialist students are progressing along nicely in their program. This week the students analyzed how the office environment is changing in the business world today. The students researched the various roles in the office, employment outlook and competencies, and evolving information management technology, systems, and resources. With the onset of COVID-19, the office practices used are rapidly changing, and business students need to have a firm understanding of what the future possibly holds for that field.
In addition, to continue with the week’s office theme, AOS student Daniela Viloria gave an outstanding presentation on proper business attire. With the ever-changing business environment, dress codes are becoming more relaxed; therefore, Ms. Viloria’s presentation explained the need for professional attire and how your appearance represents you and your organization.

This week Lake County Fire Rescue LT. Farias visited the Firefighting/EMT Combo students to give a presentation about employment opportunities with LCFR. We’d also like to congratulate the students on their graduation this week. Congratulations to Gabriel, the student chosen for the Leadership Award. They have all successfully completed their studies and are career ready!
Medical Assisting
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month the Medical Assisting students worked on teaching breast cancer screening to their patients. This is a competency that is part of the program and the students recognize the importance of ensuring their patients are well-educated.
Pharmacy Technician
This week students in the Pharmacy Technician program have been busy learning the workflow processes of the Community Pharmacy Setting. Students have rotated through completing tasks including Customer Service, Data Entry, Third Party Resolution, Cash Handling, and Retail Filling Processes. Students even worked on their critical thinking skills while playing the role of the customer in various scenarios to resolve challenging situations with patients and ensure that prescriptions were processed in the proper amount of time. They were fantastic!
This past week was also National Pharmacy Week, with October 19th being National Pharmacy Technician Day. Additionally, they wore Pink on Wednesday to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Last week the Cosmetology, Facials Specialty, and Nails Specialty students held their Annual Fall Spa Day. Spa days are held on two Saturdays per year to allow their family, friends, and clients to come in and receive special spa services. The day was a huge success and the students had fun practicing their skills.

The Lake Technical College CNC Production Specialist program partners with the NASA Hunch project which allows these students to fabricate and produce real parts that are used on the Space Station. In recognition of Manufacturing Month, Lisa Passerelli, representative from NASA, visited with the students this week to discuss and review their progress.

Over the last few weeks the day and evening Florida Law Enforcement Academy students have been busy with lots of training and activities! The evening recruits worked on building clearing and continued first aid practice while the day recruits practiced the leg sweep takedown in their defensive tactics training with Deputy Sink. TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS
Automotive Service Technology
This week the Automotive Service Technology students practiced their skills as they worked on performing a differential fluid service and completing brake inspections.
Automotive Collision Technology Technician
One of the processes that an Automotive Collision Technology Technician student must learn is “nib and buff”. After a vehicle part is refinished it must be checked for blemishes, like dirt, fisheyes, solvent popping, and clear runs. When these blemishes are spotted they are removed by sanding in stages of 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000 grit wet sanding paper. The student pictured has been practicing those skills and perfecting his craft!
Diesel Systems Technician 1 & 2
This week the Diesel Systems Technician learned how to properly remove engines from two of their practice trucks. They did an outstanding job and are now ready for the next step of a full engine rebuild.
ADULT EDUCATION
Adult Basic Education/GED® Prep/ESOL
This week in Adult Education, students in the HVAC Integrated Education and Training program continued to press on towards the goal of GED practice tests and official testing. Their focus this week was on a carbon monoxide integrated lesson. This activity included flame-roll out, acceptable %, health risks, chemical compounds, effects of geography, specific gravity, and tools to detect monoxide gas. Did you know that more people die from carbon monoxide poisoning in the Southern states than anywhere else in the country? Non-ventilated generators used during storms are the leading cause of monoxide deaths more than anywhere else in the country. Students also worked on Charlie’s, Boyle, and the Perfect Gas Laws involving solving for missing variables and linked GED algebra components to the HVAC laws.
Congratulations to our most recent GED graduate, Sydney!! She successfully passed all sections of her GED examination and is preparing for post-secondary training to begin her career.
