The results are in and Lake Technical College is proud to announce that during the 2015/16 school year, 385 adult students passed the General Educational Development (GED®) test and earned their State of Florida High School Diploma. Lake Technical College offers GED® preparatory courses on the main campus in Eustis, online and throughout the county on many partner sites, such as Goodwill, libraries, and various community organizations. Last year, the main campus implemented a new approach to adult learning by offering scaffolded classes to best serve the educational needs of each student: Beginning Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED, and FastTrack GED.
When students come to Lake Tech to enroll in an adult education course, they take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE®) test. Based on the student’s initial score, Career Advisors in the Admissions office work closely with the student to place them into the class which will best meet the individual’s learning needs and most efficiently propel them to success on the GED® test. The instructors in the classes use TABE® baseline scores to provide individualized learning plans with subject-area lessons and tutorials. As the student masters the curriculum, they can progress to the next level of class until they are ready to take and pass the GED® test and earn their State of Florida High School Diploma. Adult Education classes are available throughout the year and tuition for a class is $30 per term, plus a $20 registration fee.
The GED® is the only nationally recognized high school equivalency test that is aligned with current high school standards and career and college readiness expectations. It consists of four parts: Reasoning through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematical Reasoning. The GED® test was redeveloped and released in 2014 based on a five year review and vetting process by experienced high school and adult educators, as well as, content area experts. The result is a fully standards-based and technology enhanced test. The new test is rigorous and takes up to seven hours to complete, if taken in whole. According to the GED Testing Service®, there are three score levels to earn on the GED® test: GED® Passing Score (145-164), GED® College Ready (165-174), and GED® College Ready + Credit (175-200) which allows a student to receive up to 10 college credits. More information on the test and the revised achievement levels can be found on www.gedtestingservice.com.
