Lake Technical Center is pleased to announce the opening of Medical Assisting. With new opportunities almost daily in the health field, this program offers students an option to work in various medical settings under the direction of a physician or nurse practitioner. The program opens October 25, 2011, as a hybrid program. Students will attend class two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday for the October class and Monday and Wednesday for the January class) from 8a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and complete much of the curriculum in an online format. The program takes a maximum of 44 weeks or one and a half school years.
Medical Assisting is ideal for men and women desiring to enter the medical field. Students range in age and have a variety of experiences and background. Special admissions requirements apply. Applicants must be 18, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, and possess good physical and mental health. Students are selected based on test and interview scores. A background check and drug test will be completed during the program.
Students will learn administrative, clinical, and laboratory skills as they apply to a medical office or laboratory. The comprehensive curriculum includes: maintaining medical records, doing transcription, scheduling appointments, billing and coding for insurance purposes, computer applications, and telephone techniques for medical offices. Part of the skills a student will learn in the clinical curriculum includes: administering an EKG, drawing blood, giving injections, taking and recording vital signs, preparing patient for an exam, and assisting the physician during exam or office surgery. The last four weeks of the program, the student will be working full time in a doctor’s office in an unpaid externship.
The employment outlook for CMAs is very strong in this area. Lake Tech assists with job placement. Students may also continue their academic studies at a community college or university.
