Air conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating Technology 1 & 2
Students from Instructor Steve Bagg’s HVAC program recently took a field trip to the Royal Palm train in Mt. Dora. The students were able to see the refrigeration and air conditioning on the 1940s vintage passenger cars. Mr. Bagg said it was interesting to see how the systems are still very similar to today’s systems.
Sarah, an adult education student, will be joining the program after spring break!

Accounting Operations
Administrative Office Specialist
The Accounting Operations and Administrative Office Specialist programs had very informative presentations this week on Personal Finance, Business Communications, and High Yield Savings Accounts. Mr. Albright, from Thrivent, spoke to the class about Identity Theft, in which a student, Tia Irvin, had the opportunity to assist in instructing the program.

Practical Nursing
Recent Practical Nursing graduate, Bianca Young, was awarded a $500 scholarship by the Eustis Elks on Thursday March 7th. The presentation was made by Patsie Despain, the “Exulted Ruler” and Bill Stomp. The Eustis Elks have sponsored many Lake Technical College students throughout the years.
Pharmacy Technician
Last week, Tavares Middle School students toured the Pharmacy Tech program and competed in a prescription filling competition. The students worked in teams to locate the correct medication on the shelf and count the appropriate quantity of pills. They labeled the bottles properly and our Pharmacy Tech students verified accuracy of the finished products. The students got a real-life experience on how to process a medication for a patient.

Guest Pastry Chef Vergnault demonstrated the art of chocolate last week! The results were beautiful and the students’ artistic skills are showcased in the pictures below.

Applied Cybersecurity
This week, two students graduated from Applied Cybersecurity and two other recent graduates had been offered jobs within the field at call support center. Students have been diligently working on their studies, as well as preparing for final exams and industry exams that they will be taking soon. Some new equipment arrived Wednesday, and the students are anxious to get using it once the final pieces are delivered.

Students in the pictures are cleaning up the engine parts in order to reassemble them and practicing the drilling and extraction of broken bolts.
Diesel Systems Technology 1 & 2
This week we want to say thank you to Mike Kruenegal and the team at Maudlin International for donating a 2012 International truck. It will be used for all kinds of training to include transmission service, axle service, brake training, and more. The students were learning about fifth wheels; this is the part of the truck that connects it to the trailer. They removed it from the truck, disassembled it, inspected it, and replaced it on the truck. Other students learned how to use a dial bore gauge for measuring the cylinder bores of an engine.

There’s been a lot of interactive learning going on in ESOL this week! We enjoyed a great hands-on “How-to” Demonstration by one of our students (a physical therapist). She utilized not only a Powerpoint, but also a student volunteer to teach us about Reflexology. As always, our students participated in a lot of group work which gives them great opportunities to converse and brainstorm together. In honor of International Women’s Day, our students met in small groups to share their thoughts about gender roles, and then later entered into a class discussion and enjoyed a great video on the subject. We found and practiced English skills on new websites this week, and even found the time to celebrate a birthday or two. It is always such fun to hear “Happy Birthday” sung in many different languages!
While touring the Lake Technical College programs, along with a few Adult Ed students, Mr. Dahler invited us to come in for a tour of the welding program. He allowed our former students, Chris and Allen, to show us around and demonstrate the techniques they have been learning. They introduced other students to our group, who showed us their projects and skills. It was just an impromptu visit that couldn’t have been more helpful if carefully planned. Thank you Mr. Dahler and Mr. Sherwood for the great visit. Your students did an outstanding job showing us around! We will be sending you a few more students very soon.
