ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION
Accounting Operations / Administrative Office Specialist – The Administrative Office Specialist students celebrated Administrative Professionals Day on May 2 by providing brunch and gifts for the Lake Tech administrative professionals. During the brunch, the Lake Tech employees had the opportunity to share what they liked about working in this field and any challenges they may encounter in the workplace. This was a great learning activity for the AOS students and was a very special event for the Lake Tech employees.
LAW, PUBLIC SAFETY & SECURITY
Florida Law Enforcement Academy – This week, Class 15-17-2000-01, took the written exam for Chapter Five – Fundamentals of Patrol. The class average for the exam was 96%. Chief Hoagland from Astatula invited Ms. Theresa LaBree, a retired Maitland Police Officer, to speak to the class on Mental Health issues. The class then carried out scenarios involving individuals with mental health issues.
The next block, Criminal Investigations, was taught by Officer Carter from Winter Garden Police Department and Sergeant Wiles from Eustis Police Department. The class acted out scenarios covering topics from armed robbery, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and domestic altercations. Physical Training this week was conducted by Corporal Anderson from Groveland Police Department, Sergeant Carney from Eustis Police Department, and Master Deputy Lukens from Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
This week Night Law class 15-16-2000-03 finished Vehicle operation and took the exam which they all passed. On Thursday, they graduated.
Fire Fighting – On Monday, a Push-In Ceremony was held for the new fire engine that was purchased for the Fire Academy. Board member and Tavares Fire Chief Keith explained to the current class of students the significance of the ceremony which dates back to the 1830s at the time of horse drawn equipment. It mimics a daily routine for the firefighters because the equipment could not be easily backed into the building by the horses. Chief Ron Williams, Board Member Judy Beda, Diane Culpepper, and a representative from the fire truck manufacturer all spoke prior to pushing in the new engine which honors the men and women of the fire service.
Fire Fighter/EMT Combo Class – The students in the Fire Fighter/EMT Combo Class prepared Monday for their first live burn. Students were excited and nervous as they tried to put everything they have been studying into action.
ADULT EDUCATION – This week, Adult Ed students engaged in the Lake Tech Career Fair and gained insight on interacting with recruiters, employers, and interview skills. They developed communication and interpersonal skills.
Mrs. Girard created a wonderful lesson integrating all subjects using food store ads and menus. Students worked in pairs, creating a healthy meal plan for a week for a family of 4 with a budget of $150-200. It was interesting and fun to see the students at work creating menus and calculating amounts of food and moneys cost. We also played Kahoot using information from the ad lesson and fraction rules.
On the FICAPS front, one of our P3 students took and passed his first GED test and has a second test scheduled for next week. Subject three is right around the corner!
ESOL – Students in Marvina Hooper’s ESOL class are involved in “How to Thursdays.” They get the chance to practice their English skills by teaching others how to do something. It was amazing to see students from all over the world in one room: Korea, China, Argentina, Venezuela, Columbia, Mexico, Haiti, and Ecuador teaching something from their native country to the others.
