ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION
Accounting Operations / Administrative Office Specialist – In the classroom our students are working on a variety of activities including Excel functions and how to plan and write different types of business and personal letters. However, most of the students broke away from their course work this week to participate in the annual peep challenge. All the students had a great time collaborating and designing this year’s AOS/Accounting peep project. While this project is a fun activity, it also allows students to practice their teamwork, creativity, and leadership skills.
HEALTH SCIENCE
FireFighter/EMT Combined Program – On April 5 2017, 26 FireFighter/EMT Combined students graduated as they finished the EMT portion of the program. The graduation was well attended by family and friends of the students. Special thank you to graduation guest speaker, Dr. Sherie Lindamood, and to Dr. Diane Culpepper for validating the Certificates of Completion.

Practical Nursing – Clermont – Instructor Chuck Srock held simulated clinical experiences on the main campus Saturday and Sunday. Several of the classrooms were designated as hospital rooms, emergency room, and a cath lab. Half of the class were patients and the other half were nurses. Instructor Srock developed 12 different scenarios for the students to work through.
Medical Assisting – The students participated in the annual Peep Contest.
Practical Nursing – The next application period for the part-time program that will start in October, 2017 will be April 1 – July 31, 2017. The application period for the full-time program which will start in early 2018 in Eustis and in Sumterville will be August 1 – October 31, 2017. HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM
Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts – Lake Technical College will host the monthly meeting of the ACF (American Culinary Federation). At this meeting, local chef instructors are invited to bring students who will be eligible for scholarships to the Lake Tech program in the fall.
In addition, the students participated in the annual Peep Contest.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Computer Systems & Information Technology – This week, the students began preparing components for videos. Original content is being created for our Lake Technical College CSIT YouTube channel, coming soon!
LAW, PUBLIC SAFETY & SECURITY
Florida Law Enforcement Academy – This week the Day Law Enforcement recruits continued in the Firearms Block learning about the fundamentals and firing techniques of the shotgun. Students were instructed on tactical loading and movement to cover using the shotgun. After instruction was complete, the students were tested and qualified shooting the shotgun. The class was tested in night firing of the Glock semi-automatic pistol. The entire class did a fantastic job and everyone qualified.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the students cleaned their Glock firearms. The class was lucky enough to witness the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad detonate a van, which was later used in the training exercise taken place at Lake Tech’s Institute of Public Safety. After the exam, Sergeant Wiles from the Eustis Police Department began instructing the class on Chapter 4 – Interview & Report Writing. The recruits also continued with Physical Fitness training and drill.
Night Law Enforcement and Correction Recruit Classes – This week was a busy week on campus. Night Corrections recruits took the Intake and Release exam and all recruits passed with a class average of 96 percent. Then they continued on in the block of Supervising. The Night Law recruits took the Traffic Stops exam in which all recruits passed with a class average of 92.8%. Next was DUI Traffic Stops Block.
On Thursday, a regional Emergency Management exercise was held at the Lake Tech Institute of Safety. This exercise was designed to all local law, fire, and EMS to train for emergency events they hopefully will never occur.
MANUFACTURING
Florida Remains First in Manufacturing – For the eighth month in a row, Florida is again leading the nation in creating new manufacturing jobs. In the last year, Florida added almost 12,000 new jobs in the manufacturing industry, the most of any state across the country. What an accomplishment for our state!
Diversified job growth across the state is critical for Florida’s continued economic success, and growing our manufacturing industry continues to be a priority. Florida has more than 19,000 manufacturers, employing more than 331,000 individuals, who produce everything from food products to technology to rockets.
As we look toward the future, we must remain focused on increasing high-tech manufacturing jobs and diversifying Florida’s economy. We want Florida to be the No. 1 state in manufacturing for years to come.

TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS
Diesel Technology – This week our Diesel students learned how to identify, disassemble, inspect and reassemble air brakes on a semi-truck. They also learned how to remove a ring gear from a flywheel, how to inspect and adjust all the components of a clutch.
ADULT EDUCATION – The Adult Education faculty and administrators spent this week in Orlando attending the COABE Conference. COABE (Coalition on Adult Basic Education) is comprised of nearly 15,000 practitioners and administrators from around the country who provide instruction and leadership in advancing the education of adults through literacy and workforce development.
DeAnna Thomas serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida Adult and Community Education Association (ACE).
STUDENT AFFAIRS
- The annual Lake Tech Annual Career Boot Camp starts this week!
- Career Dual Enrollment (CDE) Applications are being accepted now for the Fall 2017 term. The deadline is April 17. See Admissions or Kim Frazier for additional information.
- The Upcoming Career Fair is scheduled for May 3. Over 30 exhibitors will be on campus to talk to students. If you know of others who wish to attend, please contact Sonya Rosenglick. In addition, Mary Vanderwater from CareerSource Central Florida will host three seminars during the Career Fair.

- Exit Interviews are being held in the Career Success Center every Monday from 1-3 pm and 4 – 6 pm; Wednesdays, 9 – 11 am and Thursdays, 9-11 am. All students need to go through the Exit Process.
- Graduation Regalia It may seem like graduation is several months away, but it will be here before you know it! Two graduation ceremonies will be held this year on June 13 at Lake Sumter State College. At 10 am, students who have earned their Florida High School diploma will received their recognition. At 2 pm, students earning their career certificates will walk across the state. Let your students know that they can pick up the graduation regalia form in the kiosk this year to make it easier for students to complete their order.
