CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Weekly Progress in Pictures

Manufacturing Facts: Manufacturers have experienced tremendous growth over the past couple decades, making them more “lean” and helping them become more competitive globally. Output per hour for all workers in the manufacturing sector has increased by more than 2.5 times since 1987. In contrast, productivity is roughly 1.7 times greater for all non-farm businesses. Note that durable goods manufacturers have seen even greater growth, almost tripling its labor productivity over that time frame.
PowerTech Generators, located in Leesburg, FL is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of mobile diesel generators. These generators are distributed worldwide and the company is poised for even more growth in the near future. Recently, they donated five diesel engines valued at more than $100,000 to the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and the Diesel Technology program. The donation will allow students to train on these specialized machines at little to no cost to the school.

Recent graduates from the Practical Nursing program enrolled in an IV Therapy Class offered by Lake Tech. This class provides additional skills to the students as they prepare to begin their careers!

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM
Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts – Emma Hoffman learned how to create a molecular gastronomy showpiece which was served inside an ice cave carving.

Christina Keith practiced her bake goods skills prior to going to the SkillsUSA competition. The practice paid off – she won GOLD!

PUBLIC SAFETY
Fire Fighting – Advanced Specialized Classes

TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS
Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing – Students Matt Norris and Marcus Floresmeraz put their auto body painting skills to use as they were instrumental in laying out and painting parts of the GeorgeFest parade float.

ADULT EDUCATION
The Adult Basic Education students have been busy making plans for the future by completing interest assessments on My Career Shines; exploring careers; and setting one-, five-, and 10-year goals.

Reading students ventured into the history and uses of catapults. Mr. England, our Adult Education volunteer, gave an overview of historical uses of the catapult as a ballistic projectile, effective in its time of warfare, as well as the intricate design of DaVinci. Students created their own catapults and tested them with pompoms and almonds. Comparisons of design and technique in releasing catapults was linked to potential and kinetic energy. Students have enjoyed seeing their experiments posted in the online management system Schoology as videos and images. As a follow up, students used an interactive website to create their own roller coasters choosing from varying angles of height plunges and loop da loops. If they got their cars through the ride without crashing, they won! If they crashed, it was back to the drawing board to create a new coaster model.

Many students have completed their reading, math, and language TABE requirements already this term and are off to complete their other TABE subjects and/or start GED® prep! A big woohoo to our student in HVAC, who has successfully taken and passed his first two GED® tests! We have also had many students take the GED® test and get their state of Florida high school diploma and are now in their career programs. Several have gone to the Computer Systems & Information Technology program, one to Pharmacy Tech, one to Diesel, and one who is just about finished with the Certified Nursing Assistant program. Congratulations to all!
