Business Management & Administration
Accounting Operations / Administrative Office Specialist – Students are springing into action on job shadowing, job interviewing and receiving job offers! Students attended a recent job fair at Goodwill Industries where about 20 local industries were represented.
We are actively selling beef sticks (eating them also) to support Skills USA so our students can attend the competition in Lakeland at the end of April. We are so proud of our own Amanda Crosby for being a Gold Medal Winner.
Law & Public Safety
Law Enforcement Academy / Correctional Officer
Current Night Law Class – The class finished up the Crime Scene to Courtroom block of instruction and completed the exam on Monday. All did great with a class average of 92%! They are moving on and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. This week they are studying for their next exam involving Critical Incidents.
New Day Law Class – The class finished up the Legal block of instruction and was heartily preparing for the mid-week exam. It always seems to be a difficult test, but the entire class passed the exam and made it through. Mrs. Sara Jane Olsen from the State Attorney’s Office was the lead instructor and was able to both prepare the recruits and give them a different perspective of the legal system. With this test now behind them, they are off for their second-high-liability in Firearms at the IPS Range.
New Night Corrections Class – The recruits continued in the classroom with the Communications block of instructions for the entire week. They will have their second exam this coming Monday and all are preparing diligently over the weekend.
Both the Corrections and Law classes were given a special treat this week when the Lake County Sheriff’s Office helicopter paid a visit to the IPS Campus. Coordinating the effort when all the classes were finishing Physical Training for the day; Eagle One flew in and landed on the Physical Agilities Course. Both the Pilot and Spotter came over and answered questions of then the recruits were able to tour the helicopter.

Advanced/Specialized Classes
Police Mountain Bike – This class started this week with hands on instruction incorporating bikes and policing. While some of the work is in the class room, a majority is actually riding around the county putting the skills they have learned in the classroom to practical use.
Manufacturing
Diane Culpepper and Jack Miller toured Ashland Technologies in Orlando on Friday, March 11. This company focuses on manufacturing cutting edge thrill rides including roller coaster chassis and amusement park equipment. This tour is sponsored by the Manufacturers Association of Central Florida. Lake Tech is a silver sponsor of MACF.

A new website, www.MadeinLake.com is being developed by Lake County to showcase the various manufacturers in Lake County allowing them to gain exposures to customers, access potential partners, foster pride and connection in Lake County. Stay tuned for more details about it as it grows.
Transportation, Distribution & Logistics
Auto Service Technology – This week our students had the opportunity to learn all about bolt extraction and thread repair as well as how to determine bolt size length and thread pitch. They all had a chance to participate and practice their own bolt extraction and thread repair.
We want to congratulate Erik Houghton who passed the A5 Brakes ASE test and passed it with a score of 91.11%. This is a very high score! We are very proud of him and his hard work and time he studying and practicing really paid off.
Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing – The Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing students and instructors went on a field trip to PPG Kissimmee Job and Career Fair. The trip was very successful with several of the students making positive contact with future employers and potential job shadowing experiences.

Adult Education
GED Prep and Adult Basic Education – Adult Ed students engaged in a Q&A session with John England, longtime Lake Tech volunteer and Social Studies guru! John gave an overview on the ins and outs of the Supreme Court. Afterwards, students had an open discussion on the duties and responsibilities of the Supreme Justices as well as the impacts of their rulings upon us as everyday citizens. Students were led through two court cases which have impacted the education system of today. Thanks to John England for an educational journey into the workings of the Supreme Court, what the difference is between conservative and liberal justices, and how the nomination of a new justice member will affect the ruling of the Supreme Court.
On the reading home-front, students delved into compare and contrast using the characters in Kipling’s The Jungle Book, wherein Venn Diagrams were used as a clear visual aid for separating differences, similarities, and shared traits. The week culminated with students venturing outside to handle several different plants/bushes, and then, creating their own Venn Diagrams. Afterwards, students used information in their visual diagrams to a fully-developed paragraph which described the similarities and differences between the two plants. An emphasis was placed on transition words as well as organization of ideas.
In the English Language classroom, students were bedazzled by a “parts of speech” rap. Students were rappin’ about nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs…The class learned about the integral component parts of English and practiced by working together on a crossword and a phenomenal assessment tool. Students continue to have access to the lesson material and other resources through the use of Schoology, the online course content management system.
Students in the math class started thinking about “Everyone has the ability to learn math at the highest levels”, although some weren’t so sure that is true. We also did an activity called “four 4’s”. The students had to come up with equations that equals each number 1–10 using four 4”s and any operation. Example for number 1 is 4/4 + 4 – 4, number 4 could be 4 x (4 – 4) + 4, number 10 could be 44/4.4.
In the GED classroom, relative and absolute dating (like Carbon-14) of fossils was discussed. Fossil samples were brought in to see. Timelines were used to visualize geologic time and the history of the earth and its creatures. In math, there was a lesson on probability with some hand-on activities to test the probability formula. This concept is used in the math, science, and social studies subject area GED tests and everyday life. Lots of GED Ready tests were taken and passed this week, proving students are ready for the real thing!

Student Affairs
Career Boot Camp will be held April 4-7 and April 11-14. Students must attend one 20-minute session each day for the two-week period. This boot camp will prepare them to land that dream job. Students can win movie tickets and be eligible for a Kindle Fire or a Laptop if they attend all eight sessions.
Graduation Regalia goes on sale beginning March 7 through April 29. Graduation will be held June 23 at Lake Receptions.
National Technical Honor Society – The NTHS Induction Ceremony will be held on May 25 at 2 pm in Room 302 at the Institute of Public Safety campus. Applications are due by April 22 to the Main Campus Business Office. Each inductee must:
- Be enrolled in a Lake Tech Career Program and has completed 50% or more of that program.
- Have maintained an attendance rate of 90% or higher; and those students in Law Enforcement and Practical Nursing have met a 95% attendance rate requirement.
- Have earned a cumulative course grade average of 93% or higher.
- Have demonstrated high moral character, a positive attitude in the classroom and in the community, and is a role model for his or her peers and has been recommended for membership in NTHS by a program faculty member.

Career Success Center Room 208A – The Career Success Center is open on Mondays (11 am until 6:30 pm), Wednesdays and Fridays (8:30 am until 4 pm). Services offered include developing and refining resumes, cover letters, and portfolios, interviewing techniques, job search assistance, and much more. Please share this information with students and graduates. The Career Success Center is located in Room A-208.

If you would like to schedule a study skills, test taking, or stress management workshop for your students any time during the semester, contact Dr. Lindamood. Or, you might like to invite Dr. Lindamood to make a brief appearance in your classroom to introduce herself to your students and explain her role as Student Success Counselor. She can assist your students with anything that may compromise their success: academic challenges, personal problems, and/or financial issues. Dr. Lindamood is a great resource for instructors and students.

Eustis Chamber Wellness – Three teams from Lake Tech will be participating in the Eustis Chamber Wellness Challenge. The kick-off meeting will be held at Cobb’s Tractor Showroom on Monday evening. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 pm, the Lake Tech teams will participate in a Wellness Group Walk. Even if you are not on a team, you can walk with us!
