Business Management & Administration
Accounting Operations, Administrative Office Specialist – This has been a short, but busy, week for our Business classes! In addition to working on our program requirements, we also took time to learn from several informative presentations.
Dominique Hutto, an Administrative Office Specialist student, presented information on the important topic of “E-mail Etiquette”, which included the do’s and don’ts of using e-mail. She also answered several questions.
We also welcomed Ms. Lucy Vanderwall as a guest speaker. Ms. Vanderwall is the Business Administrator with Hegstrom Homes. She began by describing her career and how she worked her way from different jobs to her current position as a Business Administrator. Ms. Vanderwall discussed how important education is and how it gave her opportunities. She gave examples of the importance of “soft skills” including team work. She also shared information about resumes and interview techniques, illustrating both good and not so good examples. She concluded her presentation by answering a variety of questions.

Health Science
Practical Nursing – Students in the Day Practical Nursing program spent Friday working on the famous “Adrenal/Kidney Relay Review of Knowledge.” Since the weather was so nice, the students held the challenge outside where they speed walked holding wooden kidneys and answering questions. Then, they came inside and danced to the Happy song in the lobby. (You had to see it to believe it)

Medical Assisting – Last week was Medical Assistants Recognition Week and the students celebrated with a presentation from Maria Wieglemann, CMA. Maria is the President of the Central Florida Society of Medical Assistants. Dr. Lindamood presented a personality test to the students as they learned a little bit about themselves. They also had some fun – dressing in pajamas on Wednesday and the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s for Throwback Thursday. On Friday, they enjoyed a cultural potluck.

Human Services
Cosmetology – Cosmetology students received some additional education this week, thanks to some outside help. On Monday 10/13 we had Mrs. Velma Dawson with John Amico Color come in and do a demonstration for both our AM and PM Classes. She was engaging, and several times assured the students that this class is only the beginning of a long successful career, and that as long as they have a desire to grow and learn they will be successful in this industry. For the daytime she used Karen Koontz and did an all over color with highlights, and for our PM students she used Brittany Sanford and demonstrated some lowlight techniques.
On Wednesday our PM and Facial Specialty students were privileged to have Ms. Margie Harris come in and do a skincare and makeup presentation. The students were very excited and in fact a few didn’t even want to take their break. She used Naomi Phillips-Watson as her model I have included some before and after photos.
We have been applying Pink Hair Extensions for Breast Cancer Awareness. This has actually been an opportunity to teach and help the community. Students have been shown a new way to apply extensions, therefore expanding the types of services they can offer to their guests, expand their portfolio, and generate revenue.
Our Senior and Juniors have been working hard at practical’s in Chemical Texturizing. Ed Ricci, works on a mannequin for Soft Curl Reformation while Monica Cox is applying Relaxer to a client. These are some of the fundamental techniques and skills that will set our students for success in the real world environment. These services are highly sought after and when done right can bring in lots of revenue.

Correctional Officer – Nine students graduated last week from the Correctional Officer program. Major Christopher Edelen, Department of Corrections, LCI, was the speaker. All the students who wanted to work at LCI were hired about a month ago. What a great feeling to graduate with a good job in the career field of your choice!

Guest speakers include Commissioner Leslie Campione, Senator Alan Hays, Representative Larry Metz, Congressman Daniel Webster, Dr. Susan Moxley, Sherry Reeves from the Manufacturing Association of Central Florida, and Chief Cobb. Transportation & Logistics
Automotive Service Technology – On October 15, the NATEF team was on campus to recertify the Automotive Service Technology program. The team was very impressed with the program and how it operates. The same day, two new machines were delivered – a tire changer and a tire balancer. The new equipment will help the students be more productive in the field.

Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing – Seventeen students have earned their AWS D-1 welding certification so far this year. Members of the Auto Collision Advisory Committee believe this skill will enhance the employability of the students.
In addition, faculty, staff and students have already donated $200 for Breast Cancer Awareness by signing the pink automobile hood. There is still an opportunity to sign the hood and make a donation if you haven’t already done so.
Diesel Technology – The Diesel students learned how to disassemble brake systems and how to build engines. They also enjoyed using their new engine stand.
